Let Your Voice Be Heard!
WHAT:
WORD UP! is a poetry slam open to students
enrolled in high school in Jefferson County. The participants in the
WORD UP! contest on February 28 will be the winners of the contests held
at their schools.
WHEN:
Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 3:00 p.m.
WHERE:
Birmingham Public Library, Central, Arrington Auditorium
HOW:
The deadline for schools to declare their participation is December 10,
2009. Call 226-3670, email
hm@bham.lib.al.us. Please
submit a registration form for the contest winners.
The prize for first place is $150,
second place is $100,
and third place is $75.

The poem must be the contestant’s own
creation and use one of the following themes as the inspiration:
- The power of imagination
- The power of friendship
- The power of persuasion
These are major themes in
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
by Mark Twain, the selected title for next year’s state-wide Big
Read. Your poem does not have to relate directly to this book, however.
