Hints for Searching by Title
If you know the title of the book you are searching for, click on Title at the Library Catalog. The Title Search
Screen will appear. You may then type all or part of the title for which you are
searching. Press the "Enter" key and a list of titles matching or closely
matching your entry will appear.
Helpful Hints
- You may type the title in upper- or lower-case letters.
- You may omit initial articles in English-language titles (i.e., "a,"
"an," and "the," when these articles occur at the beginning of the
title). Keep in mind that you must type in initial articles when searching for
foreign-language titles.
- Use the backspace key to erase typographical errors.
- It is not necessary to type out the entire title; however, you may NOT omit words or
letters at the beginning or middle of the title (with exception of the articles noted
above).
- It is not necessary to type in punctuation marks. All punctuation is ignored in
searching.
- The symbols $, +, #, &, and % can be searched (see example below).
- Use the vertical bar (|) when you do NOT want to truncate a word. For example, if you
are searching for a book titled The Cat, you can avoid retrieving titles beginning with
words such as "catalog" or "catastrophe" by typing in "Cat|"
- You may type either an ampersand (&) or the word "and."
- If you are uncertain of the exact title, you might be able to find the title using Keyword Search.
