If
you were a fairy tale character, who would you he? This question was put to area
children in celebration of this year's 2006
Summer Library Program, Once Upon
A Time, which begins for most libraries in late May and continues through
July.
• "I would be Rapunzel, because I have such beautiful, long hair
already." Sara Jane, age 3 1/2
"Shrek. 'cause I don't like nobody bothering my swamp! I don't
really live in a swamp. but my Mom says my room looks like a pig-sty!"
Justus, age 8
"I would be a Power Ranger, the blue one." (Interviewer
reminds child that the blue Power Ranger is not really a fairy tale
character) "Oh, then I would he the red Power Ranger."
(Interviewer just gives up.) Kenneth, age 4
"I would be a fairy. so that I could fly around and sprinkle happy dust
on everybody." Raisa, age 6 (soon to be 7!)
"I would he Belle. from Beauty and the Beast. because she is a
take-charge kind of girl." Erica. age 25 (story lovers come in all ages!)
"I would be Maleficent. because she is elegant and evil and has that
really cool raven." Rachel. age 28
"I would be the big. bad wolf...no, he's too mean. I would he
Humpty Dumpty because I like scrambled eggs." Chandler. age 7
"Who was that girl who could spin hay into gold'? I would he her, except
I wouldn't marry the king, because I wouldn't need him. I'd have
my own gold!" Rhianna, age 9
"I would be a knight with a really big sword. I know, I know swords are
dangerous but it would be hard to fight a dragon with (a set of) socker
hoppers." Clay, age 9
These
children are obviously ready for their fairy tale summer, and opportunities for
fairy tale fun are endless in area libraries as they roll out the fairies,
knights, princesses and trolls and turn ordinary libraries into fantastical
castles and enchanted woods. It would be impossible for a child to enter these
surroundings and not imagine themselves transported into a storybook, if only
for the length of a library visit.
