provides beverages. For additional information call (205) 226-3604 February 1 – The Life and Times of Emory Overton Jackson
Samford University historian Chris Davis will discuss
the life and career of the pioneer Birmingham Civil Rights activist, Emory
Overton Jackson. Jackson promoted voter registration, equal job
opportunities and education for African Americans and served on many
boards and agencies, including Birmingham's Industrial Development Board.
February 8 – Black Heritage Stamp Series Celebrates
Hattie McDaniel
This is the 29th commemorative stamp in the series and
highlights the achievements of actress, singer, and radio and television
performer Hattie McDaniel. McDaniel became the first African-American to
win an Academy Award for her role in the 1939 film Gone with the Wind.
February 15 – Africanism in African-American Culture
Anthonia Adadevoh explores the retention of some of the
culture that Africans brought to the New world during slavery through
religion, literature, and music.
February 22nd – Songs From My Soul
Bessie Hunter-Shelton will share in recital Negro
Spirituals, Black Art Songs, selections from Porgy and Bess (an
opera about Black folk on Catfish Row), arias, and other familiar
selections enjoyed by audiences everywhere.
March 1 – The Holocaust: Remembrance and Reflection
Dr. Jerry Rosenberg, New College, University of Alabama, has been studying and teaching the Holocaust, genocide, prejudice and
ethics for almost 30 years. He is eminently qualified to remember and
reflect on the Holocaust, and how each of us is affected by this tragic
event in world history.
March 8 – Lessons in Courage: Holocaust Rescuers
Dr. Donald Berry, University of Mobile, reviews the
activities of four unique individuals who, at great risk to themselves and
their families, provided means for Jews to escape the horrors of Europe
and/or sheltered Jews in their homes.
March 15 – Music from the Holocaust
Vocalist Daniel Gale, Cantor, Temple Beth-El, Birmingham
and pianist Lester Siegal, Associate Professor of Music,
BSC, will perform songs in Yiddish that describe life in the ‘shteti" (the
small Jewish communities) and a culture that disappeared after the
Holocaust.
March 22 – A Holocaust Survivor Speaks
Mr. Max Steinmetz was born in Romania. From 1941, at the
age of 17 until 1945 when he was liberated by Allied Forces, he was forced
into ghettos, incarcerated at Auschwitz, imprisoned at Birkenau and
Dachau, and escaped from the German death march, seeking refuge in a farm
house.
March 29 – The Rwanda Genocide
Dr. Chris Taylor, Dean, Dept. of Anthropology, UAB and
his wife, Esperance Uwayirege, conducted research in Rwanda and escaped
the Rwanda Genocide in 1994. He has written of the cultural face of terror
in the Rwanda genocide.
April 5 – The Trial of the Man Who Assassinated Father
James Coyle
Birmingham was rocked in the spring of 1921 by the
murder of Father James Coyle, a beloved Catholic priest, shot on the front
porch of his rectory by Edwin Stephenson, an ordained minister. John
Wright, in this program, will explore the trial of Stephenson and the
racial prejudice and religious bigotry that it uncovered.
April 12 – A Message from Water
EarthFest presents Dr. Myra Crawford, Director for the
Behavioral Research Dept at UAB. She will discuss the work of Masauro
Emotto who is a HADO (vibration) healer.
April 19 – Container Gardening
Whether you have only a tiny balcony or a huge yard,
planting in containers is a great way to enhance your garden space. Master
Gardener Charlene Chadband will demonstrate how to create unique garden
containers that anyone can do. Plant lists, potting soil recommendations,
and book recommendations will be provided.
April 26 – Yoga for You
Come out and learn some simple yoga moves and techniques
to help you relax and relieve stress. A yoga instructor from YMCA will
present this program. Bring a towel or mat and wear comfortable clothing.
