February 2 Black Heritage Stamp
The US Postal Services will celebrate the unveiling of the 28th
anniversary stamp in the Black Heritage Commemorative Stamp Series.
February 9 Children of the Movement
Join author John Blake as he discusses his book Children of the
Movement. The sons and daughters of Martin Luther King, Jr., George
Wallace, Malcolm X and others reveal how the civil rights movement tested
and transformed their families.
February 16 This Little Light of Mine
Billie Jean Young, poet, actor, activist and educator will perform
"Fannie Lou Hamer: This Little Light of Mine." Young will celebrate
Hamers legacy as a Mississippi freedom fighter and her work towards
voting rights, diversity, inclusion, empowerment and humanitarianism.
February 23 Musical Spirituals Performance
Dr. Rosephanye Dunn Powell, Associate Professor of Music at Auburn
University, is distinguished as a researcher, interpreter, and performer
of solo vocal works. Powell will give us a brief history of spirituals as
well as entertain us with song.
March 2 Kimonos of Japan
Kimono consultant Michelle Slagle will explore the history of the
kimono and explain different styles of kimono.
March 9 Alabama 24/7: Amazing Photographs of an Extraordinary State
Part of a nationwide series of books on the states, Alabama 24/7, is a
snapshot in time of simplistic and unrehearsed living in Alabama. Join us
as some of the photographers tell us how they captured the essence of our
state.
March 16 Keep Looking Up
Dr. John Thomas Porter, Pastor Emeritus of the Sixth Avenue Baptist
Church, joins us for a discussion of his book, Keep Looking Up. Dr. Porter
guides us through a look at the long history of the Sixth Avenue Baptist
Church.
March 23 Alabama Bound
Love, Honor and Cherish: A True World War II Story
Birmingham native Sandra Bonilla Thompson will share memories of her
parents as revealed through their letters to each other, and sign copies
of her recently published book /Love, Honor and Cherish. /A paratrooper in
the 101st Airborne Division, Sandra's father fought through the D-Day
invasion but was killed in combat later the same year. Her mother
persevered, raising their daughter. "I never knew him," Sandra recalls,
"and I knew my mother only as a sad widow until I edited their letters."
Join us to hear her story.
March 30 Fairy Tails
Join us for a new twist on some old tales. Margaret Davis with Creative
Dog Training is going to introduce a new series of traditional fairy tales
that is entitled Fairy Tails. The story line is the same but the
characters are all local dogs photographed in appropriate costume.
April 6 National Marrow Donor Program
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) helps connect donors to
patients who desperately need life-saving marrow or blood cell
transplants.
Join us to hear how this miraculous program works and how both donors
and patients have had their lives changed with this unique gift of life.
April 13 Smart Moves with Jackie Tally
Jackie Tally will present Smart Moves, a fitness regimen she created
that is geared toward the senior population but fun and easy enough for
anyone to do. Jackie Tally is a master certified aerobics instructor,
former P.E. teacher, counselor, and dancer who also works with St.
Vincent's Good Health School. Dress comfortably so you can participate in
this great energizing program. No age limit.
April 20 Pilates and Yoga All in One
Learn about the benefits and the basic foundation of these exercise
forms. There will also be a light stretching and relaxation segment. Dress
comfortably and bring a towel or mat for extra cushioning. This program
will feature a Yoga/Pilates Instructor from the YMCA.
April 27 Improving Your Own Mental Health
Join us for an informative look at recognizing different mental health
issues: behavioral disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, mood
disorders (depression & bipolar), and schizophrenia presented by the
Mental Health Association. Know how and where to go to get help!
