| Who can believe that it is
August already and time to get in the mood for school! Everybody knows that
school is cool, but so are the latest activities that are happening at your
local public library and the McWane Center. The libraries of the Birmingham
Public Library (BPL) System and McWane have teamed with Alabama Public
Television, the Alabama Booksmith, and FOX6 WBRC-TV to bring you a great start
to the new school year by kicking off the coolest science experiences you have
ever seen.
Guess
who is coming to the McWane Center and your local public library. Here is a hint
- he reinvented the way we think about the universe and the theories of time,
energy, and gravity. Of course, this can be just one man - Time
Magazine’s "Person of the Century" - Albert
Einstein. On September 3,
2005, Einstein, an
exhibition featuring the life and theories of the most famous scientist of the
20th century, opens at the McWane Center.
Einstein is organized
by the American Museum of Natural History, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem,
and the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles.
McWane
and the BPL libraries want you to experience
Einstein up close and
personal with a great series of events that will focus on the man and his
science. Watch for the opening event at the McWane Center Plaza with Alabama
Public Television, the Alabama Booksmith, Fox6, Birmingham Public Library,
and other special guests for games and activities, library card signups, and
more. On special dates, library cardholders will have free admission to the
adventure hall, and throughout September and October, the libraries will present
tie-in programs, including discussions on the new NOVA series
Einstein’s Big Ideas,
for adults, teens and children.
Have we finished revving up for school? NO! The whole state of Alabama needs
to know about Albert Einstein,
and we need you to help spread the word about a statewide
Einstein Challenge. Check
out one of the books on the list for the
Einstein Reading
Initiative and do your part to make Alabama number one in
Einstein smarts. Become "Einstein
Certified" by visiting
www.einsteinchallenge.com. When you finish reading your book, go to the
Birmingham Public Library’s website (www.bplonline.org),
or the McWane Center website (www.mcwane.org)
to tell us which book you read and what you think about it. We want to hear from
you! |
