November 3 – Discovering Everyday Life in Nineteenth Century Alabama
Letters and Diaries
From matters of love and death to the price of shoes, nineteenth century
Alabamians recorded their thoughts, hopes and fears in the letters they
exchanged and the diaries they kept only for themselves. Birmingham Public
Library archivist and historian Jim Baggett will explore life in the 1800s
through the personal writings now preserved in the library's archives.
November 10 – The Gillespy Journal
Virginia Pounds Brown and Matt Larson present the journals of James
McAdory Gillespy. These journals give us rare insight into everyday life
in Birmingham at the turn of the twentieth century. Interspersed in the
journals, along with interesting and often humorous details of Gillespy's
family life and his law practice, are priceless firsthand accounts of bank
closings, tornadoes, murders, fires, and Alabama-Auburn football games.
This book is a must for Birmingham history aficionados.
November 17 – Holiday Decorating
Don't have much storage space and on a limited budget too? Let Master
Gardener Rosemary Johnson show you how to make an inexpensive wreath,
broom, and basket for the holiday season. This program is certain to
brighten up your house with holiday cheer.
December 1 – Melodic Sounds of Christmas
Enjoy the piano artistry of Dr. Anthony Pattin in this holiday program.
Christmas music played and sung from many genres will get you in the
holiday spirit. The program will feature the beautiful sounds of the piano
and the sweet melodic voice of a guest vocalist.
December 8 – A Christmas Memory
Birmingham storyteller and actress Dolores Hydock presents "A Christmas
Memory". Truman Capote’s poignant reminiscence of his boyhood in rural
Alabama is brought to vivid life in this performance.
January 12 – Investing for the New Year
It's a new year and time to look at your investment plans. Richard Crew,
Vice President and Senior Financial Consultant at Merrill Lynch, will
discuss strategies for investing in these turbulent times.
January 19 – Remembering Martin Luther King’s "Letter from Birmingham
Jail"
Author and Samford University historian Jonathan Bass will discuss the
origins and writing of Martin Luther King’s, Letter from Birmingham Jail,
a seminal document of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Birmingham Public
Library staff reading from Dr. King’s letter will accompany Dr. Bass.
January 26 – Historical Voices-Featuring Dr. Frank Adams
The Historical Voices project of the Birmingham Public Library features in
this segment, Dr. Frank Adams – musician, educator, historian, and teller
of wonderful stories. Hear from this legend of our time!
