May 5 – El 5 de Mayo
Come and learn the truth about the Mexican holiday 5 de Mayo. Thought to
be the Day of Independence in Mexico, "El 5 de Mayo" is in actuality the
day Mexico celebrates its triumph over the war with France.
May 12 – Non-Population Census
Schedules
Yvonne Crumpler, Head of the Southern History and Literature Department,
will present a program on Non-Population Census Schedules. What other
censuses were taken? Why look at these schedules? Come for a fast tour
through the 19th century censuses that are often ignored.
May 19 – Cyber Roots with Jim Pate
or Ancestor Searching on the Internet
Jim Pate, Reference Librarian in the Southern History Department, will
present a program on genealogical research using the Internet. He will
showcase two subscriptions that the Birmingham Public Library provides for
its researchers.
May 26 – Dolores Hydock
Dolores Hydock, Birmingham’s own acclaimed actress and storyteller
combines her talents in a story concert featuring summertime stories. This
performance will be the world premier of her brand new story program. Ms.
Hydock always packs the house so come early and join us for great fun and
entertainment.
June 2 – Committed II Praise
Join us for this uplifting program featuring Committed II Praise, a praise
and worship ensemble formed from many religious denominations. Feel free
to clap your hands, stomp your feet, or just sit back and listen. Samuel
Robinson is the music director for this outstanding group.
June 9 – How to Start a Small
Business
What on earth does one do in order to start a business? David Ramp, of the
UAB Small Business Development Center, will give us the nuts and bolts of
becoming a business owner. Find out how to write a business plan,
incorporate, and finance your very own business!
June 16 – Tea Ceremony
The art of the tea ceremony has had a profound influence on Japanese
culture and is growing in popularity around the world. The members of the
Birmingham chapter of the Urasenke School of Tea will explain the history
and principles of this ancient art and give a demonstration.
June 23 – Home Grown Special Foods
Join us for a tasty program. Valerie Boyd and Caroline Bundy are owners of
Home Grown Special Foods. “We are what Birmingham eats” is the way they
describe their shop. Boyd and Bundy will present a program featuring ideas
for preparing quick and easy hors d’oeuvres, planning party menus, tips on
what wines to serve, and suggestions for unique gifts.
June 30 – Grant Writing 101
What is the key to securing some of the millions of dollars that are
available in the form of grants? James McCrary, of the Nonprofit Resource
Center of Alabama, will explain step by step the process of writing
successful grant proposals.
July 7 – Learn to Think Like a Dog
Margaret Jones Davis has applied her “dog friendly” methods to create
“people friendly” dogs with hundreds of pets and their owners since
founding Creative Dog Training two decades ago. She is a member of the
Association of Pet Dog Trainers and has attended training courses at
Cornell University and Volhard's Instructor School Training Camps as well
as other courses. Margaret will discuss the basics of dog training,
including her own subtle alpha rules that teach the dog in a nice human
way that she is in charge.
July 14 – A Dog By Any Other Name
Dogs come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and colors but what they have
in common is their long history and deep friendship with man. From
American Pit Bulls to Poodles, local author and dog breed expert Joe
Stahlkuppe has met and made a great many canine friends in his career.
Join us as he discusses his career and friends.
July 21 – Help! I Have a Dog!
Veterinarian R. Vaughn Walker will share tips on how to care for your
dog and keep them in tiptop shape. From diet and exercise to their yearly
physical, Dr. Walker will advise us on keeping man’s best friend healthy.
July 28 – Hand-in-Paw
Paws for Comfort, Pawsitivie
Living, Sit Stay Read! are all great programs shared by the pet therapy
teams from Hand-in-Paw. Meet a pet therapy team and hear about all the
wonderful opportunities that abound in our community. Picasso Pets will be
