The Birmingham Public Library’s Web site
was ten years old in 2003. It was launched in 1993 when the World Wide
Web was in its infancy and gophers were used to connect to various files
on the Internet. The first two versions of the BPL Web site focused on the
services and departments at the Central library and had links to several
Web browsers. Over the years the
BPL Web site has changed its look dramatically and expanded its coverage
to include all of its branches, departments, services, and collections.
The latest Web site features selected bibliographies on current topics,
holidays, and library-sponsored events. An extensive list of subject
guides includes books, audiovisual materials, and links to other useful
Web sites. In the fall of 2003, the main pages of the BPL Web site were
translated into Spanish and more links to information and Web sites of
interest to the local Hispanic community were added.
Early in 2003, the Birmingham Public
Library launched two Web sites for younger users. The
www.bplcyberkid.org site was designed to help children in Birmingham
and all over the Web find quality information for homework help and
entertainment. The
www.bplcyberteen.org site was developed for
teens seeking homework help, information on teen issues, answers to health
questions, news about what's happening in
Birmingham, or fun ways to
spend time. |
