August 4 - Antique, Treasure or Junque?

Please join us for our own version of the Antiques Road Show. We are very fortunate to have Birmingham's own Bill Carner as our guest appraiser. Mr. Carner is a certified member of the International Society of Appraisers in the area of antiques and residential contents. Bring an item you would like to know more about or its' approximate value. No coins or stamps please.

August 11 - Southern Accents on Color

Frances MacDougall is the author of Southern Accents on Color, a gorgeous book in which the author visits and photographs beautiful Southern homes in order to discuss the aesthetic effect of color vs. neutrals in interiors and to offer suggestions for using color when planning a design. Learn about the resurgence of color in decorating and how to translate your color choices into sophisticated interiors.

August 18 - Petals from the Past

Gardeners and flower lovers have been admiring the beauty of flowers for centuries just as cooks have appreciated the many uses for herbs. Many of these plants and herbs still exist. Jason and Shelley Powell, from the shop Petals From The Past, have made a lifetime study of the history and growing techniques of not only antique roses but heirloom shrubs, herbs and old-garden plants as well.

August 25 - What to Keep and What Never to Throw Away

Birmingham author, dealer, and collector Jim Reed, proprietor of Reed Books and The Museum of Fond Memories, will share his expertise on a variety of collectibles ranging from rare books, letters, and diaries, to autographs and movie posters.

September 1 - Hollywood Southern Style

Making movies can give our economy a real boost. Brian Kurlander, the Director of Public Relations for Big Communications and the former Executive Director of the Alabama Film Office, will provide an overview of the film industry as an engine for economic development in Birmingham. He will discuss the history of Alabama filmmaking, the cinematic assets that the state possesses, and the steps necessary to create a strong film industry presence in Birmingham.

September 8 - Birmingham Filmmakers

Meet two of Birmingham's independent filmmakers. With more than 20 years of experience making documentaries and commercials, George Smith will show clips from his first independent film, Take A Deep Breath, an inspirational film. Sam Frazier, Jr. will show his 12-minute comedic film Don’t Make Eye Contact. Both have been featured at Birmingham's Sidewalk Film Festival and other film festivals around the country.

September 15 - Sidewalk Film Festival

Erik Jambor, Director and Co-founder of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival will talk about the upcoming film festival to be held in the downtown Theatre District. Come see the sight map, watch a few short films, and hear about the weekend program including special guests, special screenings, and educational opportunities.

September 22 - The Art of Filmmaking

Documentary filmmaker Michele Forman is currently teaching filmmaking at UAB, where her students use new digital technology to produce portraits of communities in the Birmingham area. She continues to produce and direct her own work, including a work-in-progress following five women with breast cancer and the 2001 production Coat of Many Colors about 20th-century Alabama artists (nominated for an Emmy). Forman has also worked with Bravo, the Sundance Channel, and with photographer Annie Leibovitz and director Spike Lee. If there is a film in you or if you would like to hear about behind-the-scenes filmmaking, please join us.

September 29 - The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham

The Women's Fund of Greater Birmingham, a component fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, reaches out specifically to women and girls in the Greater Birmingham area who are in need. Join us to learn about two of their initiatives: Women on Wheels (transportation for senior women) and Cut it Out (training cosmetologists to report news of abuse).

October 6 - Music by the Alabama School of Fine Arts

The ASFA Chamber Players and Chamber Choir will play classical pieces from a variety of styles and periods. They have played throughout Alabama for mayors and governors over the years. Join us as we listen to some of the best music students in the state.

October 13 - Alabama School of Fine Arts Dancers

The ASFA Dance Department will present a lecture, demonstration, and performance. They will include a repertoire of dance styles such as "Rocka ma Soul", "Swing", and other selections. After the performance there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion about the training and development of young dancers.

October 20 - Lee Smith’s South Alabama Stories

Local storyteller Lee Smith will share reminiscences and lies about growing up in South Alabama going back several generations. These stories are born of experiences living surrounded by a large extended family, and among his collection of relatives and other characters, you are sure to find some who resemble your own dearly beloved. Lee’s stories are lively, hilarious, and occasionally heartbreaking. Ya’ll come, you hear?

October 27 - Trick or Treat?

You never know who might show up for Halloween. Join us for a hair-raising mystery guest guaranteed to spook and delight.
