An Interview with Alabama Author Dorothy McDaniel
Tell us a little bit about your background.
I grew up in a large Greek family. My mother says I often gathered flowers and brought them in to her. She always had fresh flowers on the table at home. Looking back, flowers have always been an important part of my life.

Tell us about your work. How did you get started in the flower business?
I studied sociology and criminology in college. However in 1975, while teaching part-time at the UAB and raising three children, my marriage ended and life changed. I had always arranged flowers for friends for special occasions. In November 1977, I opened a small flower boutique in Homewood. The space was about twelve feet by fifteen feet. I now own Dorothy McDaniel’s Flower Market, a 6,000 square foot space.

Are you currently working on any other books?
I plan to work on a more advanced volume but have not yet started it.

(book jacket) East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Set in the rich farmland of the Salinas Valley, California, this often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations hopelessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.
(book jacket) Firebird by Janice Graham
In the tradition of The Horse Whisperer comes this tale of a man caught between two women--one who shares his life and his dream of land, the other a stranger whose love threatens to destroy the dream he has built. This is a novel from the heart that tells a story of universal truths.
(book jacket) The Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. This is the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius, even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.
(book jacket) The Sunday Wife by Cassandra King
For 20 years, Dean has struggled to be the perfect wife for her highly ambitious minister husband, but his idea of perfection doesn’t fit with who she really is. It isn’t until she befriends a wild socialite that Dean has the courage to step out of the strictures of her marriage and become her own true self.
(book jacket) The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
This is the remarkable story of Henry, a dashing librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. A spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, this book is destined to captivate readers.
