No reservations are needed.  Programs are free and open to the public. 

 

Birmingham Public Library — Central

These programs are held at 12:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor auditorium of the Linn-Henley Building.  The library provides beverages. For additional information call (205) 226-3604

May 7 - The Country Church and Its Music
Joyce Cauthen will speak on the country church and its music. She will discuss and perform examples of archaic forms of a cappella sacred music that people still sing today, including spirituals, hymns, and Sacred Harp.

May 14 - The Freedom Quilt
Edna Turner will give her Freedom Quilt presentation. The Freedom Quilt has a design on it that shows the routes the slaves had to travel to escape their lives of slavery.

May 21 - Alabama Author Jackie Matte
Alabama author Jackie Matte will discuss Southeastern Indians and her book They Say the Wind is Red.

May 28 - Genealogical Jaunt with Yvonne Crumpler
Yvonne Crumpler will take you on a short genealogical jaunt as she discusses the use of maps in ancestral research.

June 4 - The Birmingham Press Comes of Age: The Harding-Johnson Suicides

June 11 - Alabama at the Movies: The Golden Years

June 18 - The Tragic Death of Emmett Till

June 25 - Breaking the Ice: The Role of Ice in Southern History and Culture

July 9 - Antiques Road Show
Please join us for our version of the ‘Antiques Road Show’. We are very fortunate to have Bill Carner as our appraiser. Mr. Carner is a certified member of the International Society of Appraisers in the area of antiques and residential contents. Bring an item you would like to know more about or what it is worth. No coins or stamps please.

July 16 - Convict the Crooks
Many mystery novels are based on true crime stories and investigations. Two evidence technicians from the Birmingham Police Department will explain how evidence is collected in crime investigations and how it is used to catch and convict criminals. See if CSI, NYPD Blues, Forensic Files, etc. are really true to life.

July 23 - Book Groups with Susan Swagler
Susan Swagler, Birmingham News book columnist, will discuss different kinds of book groups. Ms. Swagler is a veteran member of book groups of all kinds. If you are in a book discussion group or would like to form one, she will give you many helpful tips on how to organize a successful book group.

July 30 - Storyteller Dolores Hydock
Dolores Hydock, Birmingham’s own acclaimed actress and storyteller, will present a solo presentation of some of her favorite works of fiction. Ms. Hydock always packs the house and for good reason. This is a must see.

Homewood Library

These programs are held on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. Bring a sack lunch.
