August 13 - History of Sports in Early Birmingham
Birmingham has always been a city of sports fans. In early Birmingham
people could watch athletic events at the fairgrounds, Lakeview Park, or
any number of company-sponsored baseball fields. For those more inclined
to participate, the old downtown Birmingham Athletic Club offered
facilities and potential teammates. With stories and pictures, historian
and archivist Marvin Whiting will trace the history of sports in early
Birmingham.
August 20 - Birmingham Resorts
Before interstate highways and air travel most people vacationed close to
home, whether they wanted to relax for a whole season or just the
afternoon. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries Birmingham

swimming, dancing, and roller coasters. For most local residents these
resorts were a short streetcar ride away. Regina Ammon, Archives Dept.,
BPL, will show slides and explore the history of Lakeview, East Lake, West
Lake, and Edgewood.
