November 5 - Faces of Birmingham: The Evolution of Our City’s Skyline
A century ago downtown Birmingham looked very different
from today with rows of ornate Victorian buildings standing only a few
stories tall. The development of steel construction and the electric
elevator allowed builders to construct skyscrapers that towered over and
finally replaced much of the old architecture. Archivist and historian
Marvin Whiting will show slides and explore the changes in the
architectural face of Birmingham.
November 12 - Every House Has a History
Whether you live in a modest bungalow or a century-old
mansion, you will find resources at the Birmingham Public Library to help
you learn more about your house and the people who have lived there.
Archivist Jim Baggett will help you begin your search by discussing
sources and methods for piecing together the unique history of your home.
November 19 - Wil Clay
Birmingham Public Library presents Wil Clay as our guest
for Children’s Book Week. Mr. Clay is the renowned children’s illustrator
of over thirteen books. Wil Clay has illustrated many picture books,
including Little Eight John, which was selected as a Coretta Scott
King Honor book, Tailypo!, The Real McCoy, The
House in the Sky, and I Am Rosa Parks.
December 3 - The Magic of Christmas
The Seasoned Readers will get you in the holiday spirit
with their dramatic reading of The Magic of Christmas.
December 10 - A Christmas Memory
Birmingham storyteller and actress Dolores Hydock presents
A Christmas Memory. Truman Capote’s poignant reminiscence of his
boyhood in rural Alabama is vividly brought to life in this performance.
January 7- Merrill Lynch
Do the financial news reports leave you completely
confused? Come get a clear picture of the market outlook for the new year. Join
Richard Crew of Merrill Lynch who will provide information on
understanding market reports.
January 14 - Martin Luther King’s Letter from
Birmingham Jail
Martin Luther King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail is
one of the defining moments of American history. Accompanied by members of
the Birmingham Public Library staff reading from Dr. King’s words, Samford
University historian Jonathan Bass will discuss the events surrounding the
writing of the finest treatise of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
January 21 - Kitchen Designs
Tired of cooking in or looking at an out-of-date kitchen?
If so, we have the solution. Join us for a Brown Bag Program featuring a
professional kitchen designer from Brewer Cabinets. She will give advice
and tips on how to design a new kitchen or update an old one. You can have
a kitchen that looks like a million, not like a million others.
January 28 - The Secret Service
Exactly what does a Secret Service agent do? Join us as a
local representative from the United States Secret Service tells us about
this intriguing line of work, including the agency’s history,
responsibilities, and the requirements for engaging in this endeavor.
