Birmingham Public Library — Central

These programs are held at 12:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor auditorium of the Linn-Henley Building.  The library provides beverages. For additional information call (205) 226-3604

November 6 - Alabama School of Fine Arts Jazz Ensemble
Organized in 1983, Alabama School of Fine Arts Jazz Ensemble has performed throughout Alabama. The award-winning combo performs a wide variety of music, from traditional jazz, pop and show tunes to more contemporary jazz and fusion stylings, including tunes from Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa and Birmingham's own Sun Ra.

November 13 - Antique Maps
Dr. Amanda Schedeler will present a program on the map exhibit now on view in the Birmingham Public Library's gallery. Dr. Schedeler, a specialist in historic prints, has her own print gallery in Homewood, Alabama.

November 20 – Birmingham Waltz
Vaudeville meets Birmingham as a group of old friends prepare for an upcoming reunion. Join the Seasoned Performers as they present Birmingham Waltz, a one-act comedy by Alan Litsey.

December 4 - A Christmas Memory
Birmingham storyteller and actress Dolores Hydock presents A Christmas Memory. Truman Capote’s poignant reminiscence of his boyhood in rural Alabama is brought vividly to life in this performance.

December 11 - A Folk Christmas with Flying Jenny
On fiddle, guitar and banjo Flying Jenny (Joyce and Jim Cauthen and Duncan Blair) will play lively tunes and sing songs that have been part of Christmas celebrations in the South since the 1800s. Flying Jenny plays old-time string band music, which was the music of the American settlers from the British Isles and is a forerunner of bluegrass and country music.

January 8
Richard Crew, Vice President and Senior Financial Consultant at Merrill Lynch, will discuss the market outlook for the upcoming year.

January 15
Kim Butler, registered nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital, will discuss the dangers of smoking and how to quit once and for all.

January 22
Peggy Polk, Director of Training, Employee Assistant Services, will present a discussion on credit repair and getting out of debt.

January 29
Kim Towry, registered Dietician at St. Vincent’s Hospital, will discuss the importance of exercise, your target heart rate and how a healthy diet can lead to lower cholesterol
and a healthy heart.

Homewood Library
Brown Bag Film Series, 12:15 p.m.

These programs are held on Wednesday, November 6, 14 and 20, December 4 and 11, January 8, 15, 22 and 29. Bring a sack lunch.

Beverage and dessert furnished by Friends of the Library.

Emmet O’Neal Library (Mountain Brook)
The Brown Bag Lunch Series is held every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

Drinks and dessert provided by library.

January 22 - Fairy Tales and Folklore
Dr. Susie Paul, a professor at AUM, will discuss the role of fairly tales and folklore in our culture.
