Go Figure! An Interactive Math Exhibit
Go Figure! What is it and where did it come from? Learn more about this interactive math exhibit for children ages 2-7. Find out all those pointers that can help your child begin to acquire the beginning math concepts children need to form before attending school. A tour of the exhibit will be available at the end of the program.

Every Day Math
Bernice Freeman, a teacher and trainer with the Birmingham City School system, will discuss how young children acquire math knowledge. Ms. Freeman, a long-time kindergarten teacher, has held workshops for the Birmingham City schoolteachers training them in using the math curriculum, Every Day Math.

Math and Music!
Dr. Michael Sterner, professor of mathematics from the University of Montevallo, will discuss the relationship that math and music share with each other. Dr. Sterner is an accomplished jazz guitarist as well as mathematics professor.

Computer and Kids!
Do computers really help? Learn about the different computer products available for young children and how they work. Several different programs will be demonstrated.

Incredible Technicolor Brain Machine
The Incredible Technicolor Brain Machine, produced by Childcare Resources, shows how new research in brain development has revealed that early experiences help to determine the way children learn, think, and behave for the rest of their lives.

That Old Time Housekeeping
Do you want to learn how to rid your mattress of bedbugs, how to make chicken stew with squirrels, or how to clean your ivory knife handles? Celebrate Alabama history with Alabama author Carol Padgett and travel back in time to 19th century Alabama.

Black and White and Read All Over
Patterson Toby Graham, head of special collections at the University of Southern Mississippi, will discuss his new book A Right to Read: Segregation and Alabama’s Public Libraries.

This Old Neighborhood
Birmingham novelist and historian Cathy Adams will introduce her new book Worthy of Remembrance: A History of Redmont, and discuss ways to research the histories of Birmingham neighborhoods.

The Good Book
Thousands of editions of the Bible have been published since the introduction of printing to Europe in the 1400’s, and many of these Bibles represent the very best of the bookmaker’s art. Retired Birmingham Public Library director George Stewart will show rare volumes from the library’s Bible collection and discuss the history of the printed Bible.

July 10
Thinking About a Book Group?
Susan Swagler, Birmingham News book columnist, will discuss different kinds of book groups. She will give tips on what works and what does not work when organizing a group.

Alabama Author Marlin Barton
Marlin Barton will read a selection from his short story collection, The Dry Well.

Marlin is an Alabama author whose stories are set in Alabama.

Tradition and the Individual Talent
Pam Kingsbury ties the themes of literary giant John Steinbeck to contemporary Southern authors Rick Bragg and Homer Hickam.

July 31
Birmingham Favorite Dolores Hydock
Dolores Hydock, actress and storyteller, will present a solo theater selection from one of her favorite works of fiction.

These programs are held at 12:00 noon in the Arrington Auditorium on the 3rd floor of the Linn-Henley Building.  The library provides beverages.
