Southern Voices: A Celebration of Southern Culture
The annual Southern Voices conference is scheduled for February 23 – 25, 2001 at the Hoover Public Library. In its ninth year, Southern Voices is a three-day conference exploring the characteristics of southern culture as reflected in our contemporary arts. Southern Voices will feature a diverse group of authors representing numerous styles and backgrounds as well as noted artist Bill Hill and the premiere performance of Remembering Blue, songs inspired by Connie May Fowler’s novel of the same name.

The conference begins Friday, February 23rd with the humorous noted Georgia author and National Public Radio commentator, Bailey White. A dessert reception and book signing will follow this event.

The Authors’ Conference on Saturday will feature Connie May Fowler (Remembering Blue), science fiction writer Orson Scott Card (Ender’s Game), Robert Morgan (Gap Creek an "Oprah pick"), Doug Marlette (editorial cartoonist and creator of Kudzu), Andrew Hudgins (Babylon in a Jar), Megan Sexton (Claiming the Spirit Within), Martin Clark (The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living), Michael Chitwood (Hitting Below the Bible Belt), Tom House and Jim Murphy (The Memphis Sun),

Saturday evening will feature the premiere performance of Remembering Blue, songs inspired by Connie May Fowler’s beautiful love story. Following another matinee performance on Sunday, Connie May Fowler will appear with composers/lyricists Karren Pell, Tommy Goldsmith and Tom House for a question and answer session in the Library Theatre. Artist Bill Hill will be honored at a reception in the Friends Gallery on Thursday, February 22.

Cost for the entire conference is $65. Individual event tickets may be purchased as follows: Friday’s An Evening with Bailey White $20; Saturday’s Authors’ Conference $35 (including lunch); Remembering Blue $15.
