Birmingham Public Library – Central
Southern History Department Presents:
An Introduction to Genealogical Research. This
is a beginning genealogy class taught by the staff of the Southern History
Department that covers basic research techniques and terminology and explains
how to use the Federal Census for genealogy. Remaining classes in 2000 will be
taught on the following Sundays: November 12, & December 10 from 2:30 –
4:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, November 28 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Classes are free
and no registration is required.
The Birmingham African-American Genealogy Study Group
(a Special Interest Group of the Birmingham Genealogical Society) will meet in
the Richard Arrington, Jr. Auditorium at 3:00 p.m. on October 8, November 5,
December 3, and January 7.
Tracing your African-American Ancestry Using Military
Records. Presented by Frazine Taylor from the Alabama Department of
Archives and History. The program will be held in the Richard Arrington, Jr.
Auditorium on Saturday, January 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration
is required and there will be a charge of $5.00. Call 226-3665 for more

Babies Are Born Learning…..Make
Every Moment Count
A Special
Project through Childcare Resources
Childcare Resources is pleased to announce the development of a video
entitled The Incredible Technicolor Brain Machine. This
presentation shows how new research in brain development has revealed that
early experiences help to determine the way children learn, think, and
behave for the rest of their lives. It also suggests how this information
could be used by parents, grandparents, students, educators, and policy
makers to improve the quality of life for our children.
Childcare Resources has donated a copy of this video to all public
libraries of Jefferson County. It is their hope that, through this
cooperative effort, they may spread the campaign message: Experiences
in the first three years of life are critical in laying the foundation for
future learning and successes.

Arthur's
Library Adventure Program |
| Many Jefferson County Libraries
will celebrate Childrens Book Week, Nov. 13 - 19, with ARTHUR Library
Adventure Programs. The libraries have teamed up with local Piggly Wiggly
grocery stores and Libbys Juicy Juice to offer exciting ARTHUR library
programs and giveaways. |

Kids twelve and
under can enter the ARTHUR coloring contest by picking up an entry form at
their local Piggly Wiggly grocery store. After completion, present the
entry form to a participating Jefferson County Library. Entries will be
judged from a random drawing and one grand prize winner will receive a set
of Marc Brown ARTHUR books and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.
In addition, you can take ARTHUR home with
you. Just collect 10 proofs of purchase from any Libbys Juicy Juice
product. Redeem them at a participating Jefferson County Library during
Children's Book Week, Nov. 13 - 19 for a 7" ARTHUR plush doll (while
supplies last).
Be sure to check your library's calendar of
events for the date and time of special ARTHUR Library Adventure programs.
