How I Conquered the Homework Monster by Justin Average-Kidd

Hi! I’m Justin Average-Kidd, and I just came off a really RAD summer! I rode the roller coaster at Visionland, caught a football at a Steel Dogs game, went to the Barons game on 25-cent-hotdog night and ate TEN hot dogs (beating my previous record of eight!), read over 2000 pages in the Summer Reading program at my library, and swam so much that my hair turned green! But summer is over and now I’m back at school, worrying about how I’m going to tackle all this HOMEWORK! Fortunately, while I was hanging out at the library this summer, I stumbled on some great homework helpers, and being the kind of kid that I am, I’m going to share them with you!

Alabama Virtual Library- WOW! This thing is like having the whole library on your computer! You can access Groliers Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Britannica, Poemfinder and tons of other sites that are perfect for getting information for reports. They even have sites that are set up just for us kids, including my favorite, Searchasaurus. The animal search on this one is SO COOL! You can find these sites by going to www.jclc.org and clicking on the Alabama Virtual Library logo. You need a Jefferson County library card or Alabama Virtual Library card to get to this information, but you can get both of these at any public library in Jefferson County. Easy!!

My Librarian- This summer, I really wanted to read the third book in the Harry Potter series, and when I went into the library, I couldn’t find a copy. So, I had to do a really scary thing: I had to actually TALK to the librarian! But guess what? She wasn’t that bad! In fact, she was really nice and I actually talked to her several other times over the summer. I found out she knows where absolutely everything is and there isn’t a book that has ever been written that she doesn’t know about! Now that we are buddies, I won’t be shy about asking for help. There are books on just about everything at the library, and if I can’t find what I need, I know she’ll be there to help me. You should get to know your librarian. He or she may end up being your best friend at report time!

E-Books- That stands for electronic books, I think. Anyway, the Jefferson County Library Cooperative (hey, that’s a mouthful) is subscribing to an electronic book service, and you can read an entire book on your computer! You can find out which books they have by going to www.jclc.org and clicking on the Ebooks link. Books check out for 24 hours and then they are automatically returned. No late fees! (Now maybe I can spend my allowance on something besides library fines!)

Now that I’m hooked up with my library, I don’t have to worry about my schoolwork getting the best of me. That one little library card (they say this card can be used at ANY public library in our county!) can turn even the biggest homework monsters into pussycats! And don’t forget …. If you get stuck, you can always ask the librarian for help!

(Justin Average-Kidd is a fictional kid created by April Moon. Real kids can get their own library cards by going to their nearest library with a parent or guardian and completing the short application. Once you have a Jefferson County Library Card, you can enjoy all the homework help Justin finds so valuable, plus other services your own library may offer!)
