Join at your local public library

From July 16 – September 10, 2000, a glorious exhibition featuring the works of Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954), a giant of modern art and one of the most beloved artists of the 20th Century will be on display at the Birmingham Museum of Art. This exhibition features 68 dazzling works spanning 1898-1950. They are drawn from the Cone Collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art, an internationally renowned collection of modern art. The exhibition marks the largest U.S. tours of Matisse works from this Collection in more than 20 years.

The public libraries of Jefferson County, in conjunction with the Birmingham Museum of Art and the Matisse Exhibition, invite you to learn more about Matisse, Picasso, Impressionism, Abstractions, and Fauvism by signing up for our Adult Reading Program. The public libraries of Jefferson County have a wealth of information on these subjects. Check out our materials and qualify for a chance to win several prizes.

Library patrons (aged 18 and older) may choose fiction or non-fiction books, books-on-tape, or videos checked out from any public library in Jefferson County.

Just fill out the entry card on the Adult Reading Program bookmarks as you read material on Matisse, Picasso, Impressionism, abstractions, fauvism or other artists and movements of this time period. Turn in the entry cards at any participating public library in Jefferson County.

All entry cards submitted for the drawing must be turned in by closing Wednesday, August 23, 2000. Winners will be informed by telephone or mail.

Author and educator, Jerdine Nolen says, "I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. My mother says she thinks I was born with a pencil in my hand. Ideas seem to be around me all the time. My ideas come from reading, writing, and living day-to-day in the world – then I follow where they lead!"

Come join us as ALA Notable Book Award winner, Ms. Nolen shares her love of reading and writing with us through slides and book sharing.
